This is the second book I’ve read by Cherie Priest. Her first book (Boneshaker) was good, but this one is even better. It’s set in the same universe as the first one, but it is almost a stand alone book. We are introduced to completely new characters and get a clearer perspective of how Priest’s alternate history version of the US is structured. A picture of a civil war that never ends, and an independent Republic of Texas that profits by designing and selling war machines to the Confederacy. Everything is told from the point of view of Mercy, a nurse with ties to both sides of the civil war conflict.
As much as I liked the first book, I actually like this book better. Looking forward to the third book in the series.
