Abercrombie writes some of the darkest grittiest fantasy out there. His battle scenes (and there are always lots and lots of them in his books) are so graphic you can almost taste the blood and dirt as you read.
His first trilogy (The first law series) was a real pleasure to read, and this book is set in the same world as that one. We get a good picture of the “Northmen” (who remind me of old style Norse vikings) and their political organization. The whole book revolves around a single battlefield with a central ruin called “The Heroes.” So we get lots of battles and violence.
I liked the book, but it probably isn’t for everyone. The heavy and graphic violence will probably turn a lot of people off.
